What a year it has been in electronic music! In the UK alone there has been some truly memorable club nights, some blistering festivals and not forgetting loads of amazing music. This time of year is favourable for awards season across the creative industries, and dance music is no different. We were lucky enough to be in attendance at Egg a few Thursday nights ago for DJ Mag’s annual Best of British awards. It was great to honour some of the stars from the past 12-months. We pick-out a handful of winners, and where you can catch them heading into 2018.
DJ Mag Best of British – Best Duo: Solardo
Next Playing: Solardo Sessions, Oval Space, London on Sat 24 Feb 18
Solardo had a monumental year in 2017, so this accolade was rightfully deserved, fighting-off competition from other worthy nominees such as Dense & Pika. The Mancunian lads conquered the tech house world with a flurry of productions, whilst their Sola imprint went from strength-to-strength featuring the likes of CamelPhat and introducing us to hot sensation Mason Maynard. On the gig front, they hosted their own Solardo Sessions arena at Abode In the Park. We can’t wait to see the antics unfolds against the backdrop of Bethnal Green’s dystopic gasholders when they roll into Oval Space.
DJ Mag Best of British – Best Compilation: Special Request fabricLIVE91
Next Playing: NYD: Undivide at Printworks London on Mon 01 Jan 18
In 2017 Paul Woolford had arguably his biggest year in music to date. And it has been almost exclusively under his pan-genre, bass-phile moniker Special Request. Not only did he contribute to fabric’s long-running mix series, but his Belief System project was released on their label Houndstooth to critical acclaim. Zig-zagging from ambient to drone, breakbeat to hardcore; it was his loveletter to pirate radio. On New Year’s Day he hooks-up with DJ Zinc for a fantasy B2B battle at Printworks. This is something not to be missed!
Mixmag’s DJ of the Year: Nina Kraviz
Next Playing: Junction 2 Presents, Tobacco Dock, London on Sat 10 Feb 18 by day and Junction 2 Presents, Motion Bristol on Sat 10 Feb 18 by night.
Already announced for the third-edition of Junction 2 fest at Boston Manor Park in early June, you can catch Siberia’s favourite daughter before then at either pre-party: London or Bristol – take your pick! Mixmag’s choice for their coveted DJ of the year title is well-deserved in our book. Nina proving that track selection is the key component of any set. We were left on tenterhooks as it was revealed Kraviz has misplaced her deep vinyl collection after appearing at The Social back in September. Fortunately for her – and us – her bags were recovered. Phew!
The DJ Awards (Ibiza) – Label of the Year: Drumcode Records
Catch Drumcode artists playing at Junction 2, Boston Manor Park on Sat 09 Jun
Another deserved winner, Drumcode ascending to the top of the techno universe by releasing material from Julian Jeweil, Ilario Alicante, Sam Paganini, Dense & Pika and breaking new talent such as Enrico Sangiuliano, Layton Giordani & Vinicius Honorio. Whilst we have only been treated to the first wave of announcements for next year’s J2, we know for certain that label head and festival ambassador Adam Beyer will once again be front-and-centre of proceedings. Judging by previous years, we’d expect plenty of his Drumcode cohorts to be joining him underneath the M4 flyover. Stay tuned for more announcements in the coming weeks!
DJ Mag Best of British – Best Large Club: Egg London
Next one: EGG LDN NYE w/ Pan-Pot, Dense & Pika, Tobi Neumann on Sun 31 Dec 17
Egg continue to deliver some of the beefiest Friday and Saturday night line-ups anywhere in the capital. Investment into the refurb of several parts of the club, have elevated it as the dark horse contender for venue of the year. And the fact that it regularly runs late into Sunday morning means it’s exceptional value for money – no need to find an afters! Their NYE line-up is bangin’ – arguably the only option for purebred tech heads!
