The countdown is on until Applebum bring the biggest and best celebration of Hip Hop and R&B culture to Sankeys Ibiza for the first time with a ground breaking 13-week residency. Applebum looks set to make Hip Hop history with the first series of events of its kind on the White Isle. Running every Tuesday night from June 21 st until September 13 th , Applebum will be bringing a taste of the old school and showing Ibiza what Hip Hop is all about. These are our picks for 5 retro artists not to miss at Sankeys this summer:
Grammy-award winning New Yorkers, Blackstreet, will be mixing up with their soulful, slow jam vibes in Applebums sixth week’s headline slot. The R&B/ Funk quartet has an inspiring history of collaborations with some of Hip Hop’s most legendary names, including Dr. Dre, Ja Rule and Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Best known for their classic hit and certified club night staple “No Diggity”, Blackstreet will be sure to get Applebum’s crowd moving.
4) Grandmaster Flash
Grandmaster Flash will be taking Applebum goers on a journey back to the roots of Hip Hop as he headlines Sankeys on 5 th July. Flash’s original DJing skills of cutting, back spinning and mixing have been said to have transformed the turntable into a real instrument. In 2007 he, along with the Furious Five, became the first Hip Hop act to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He pushed the envelope, broke the rules and became a revolutionary driving force behind the continuing development of Hip Hop as we know it.
Yet another Grammy winner will be on the mic at Sankeys this August as notorious rapper Coolio headlines in week eight. Coolio helped push rap into the mainstream as he rose to fame in the 90’s with hits such as “Gangsters Paradise”, “C U When U Get There” and “Fantastic Voyage”. Coolio made himself a true household name in Hip Hop as he collaborated with the likes of Snoop Dogg, Method Man, LL Cool J and Busta Rhymes.
2) DJ Yella
DJ Yella is an American born producer, rapper, film director and Hip Hop legend who hails from the city of Compton. An original member of the notorious World Class Wreckin’ Crew alongside Dr. Dre, Yella then went on to found one of the key rap groups ever – NWA. With Dre, MC Ren, Ice Cube, Eazy-E and Arabian Prince, DJ Yella fomented a raw, politically charged brand of rap that turned out a classic album and many standout singles.
1) The Sugarhill Gang
Legendary Sugarhill Gang will headline the closing party of Applebum, this will be a show that simply cannot be missed. The group are notorious for bringing Hip Hop into popular culture around the world with one of the most pivotal songs in Hip Hop history, 1970’s “Rappers Delight”. Generally considered to be the first ever real commercially successful Hip-Hop track, the song was named as one of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” by Rolling Stone, as well as earning itself a place on the Nation Recording Registry, a list of recordings seens as “culturally, historically or aesthetically important” in the US.
