7 BEST SET ONE TWENTY MOMENTS OVER THE YEARS

Few promotions can claim to have found success at either end of the M1, but Set One Twenty are an exception to the rule with conquests in both London and Leeds. Celebrating their 7th birthday in 2019, they had made Mint and 93 Feet East their homes, respectfully - although they have hosted one-offs at various locations and started life at one-time best UK small club, The Garage.

Over the years, the outfit has worked with some of the most respected talent the house and techno universe has gifted us. Names like Roy Davis Jr., Seth Troxler, Mr. C, Moodymann, Carl Craig and Kyle Hall read like a roll of honour’s wet dream. But Set One Twenty has also stayed at the forefront of the modern scene, championing names such as Margaret Dygas, Sonja Moonear, Rhadoo and Leon Vynehall. They’re no stranger to big-hitters, either. The likes of Ben Klock, Chris Liebing, Nastia have all appeared under their banner. They even brought a certain Bronzo duo the Martinez Brothers to Leeds, long before their recent high-profile success.

With so many highlights to mention, we’re picking out 7 of our favourite - one for each year Set One Twenty has been in existence.

1. The Garage, Leeds

Going right back to the very beginning, we can’t ignore the formative year when the party was born. The Garage hosted five parties in total. They may have been humble in comparison to today’s exploits, but friendships were forged on that dancefloor and have stood the test of time.

2. Omar S at Mint Club, Leeds

In addition to incubating homegrown talent, Set One Twenty has always given props to the architects of the scene. One such homage was the debut booking of Detroit house legend Omar-S back in 2014. It would be the catalyst to book further scene legends in the coming years.

3. Under the bridge with Varhat at the Sunday Afters

French talent Varhat gets the next spot. His turn in the shadow of the Truman Brewery viaduct had proper Sunday afterhour’s appeal. Easily, one of the most memorable sets in the history of the party - and one commonly mentioned during reminisces.

4. Ricardo Villalobos & Zip on The Terrace, Leeds

End of May bank holiday weekend 2017, and a link-up with System. would provide one of the more recent entries into the scrapbook. Ricardo Villalobos and Zip are two DJs whose stature cannot be overstated. Individually mavericks, magic is always guaranteed on the rare occasion they get to share a booth. A six-hour B2B masterclass from the German-based duo is the stuff of legend, as you might expect. Anybody who quibbles about the nuances of minimal house, would surely rethink had they experienced it. Romanian Barac contributed to the stripped back aesthetic of the party.

5. Sweely Live @ 93 Feet East, London

It hasn’t only been DJs who have helped elevate the party to dizzy height, but live acts as well. Mathew Jonson, Maribou State and a pre-controversy Ten Walls have all performed. However, it is lesser-known Sweely who takes the accolade as having the most memorable of shows. Those in attendance were in for a treat, as the Concrete-affiliate stole the show at 93 Feet East.

6. End of an Era Party with East End Dubs & Ingi Visions at Mint Club, Leeds

Emotions were running high, when it was announced that Mint clubs was to cease trading. Inviting back all of the artists and promoters who had helped shape its legendary run, Set One Twenty got their opportunity on 9th February earlier this year. End of an era it most certainly was, but it was given the send-off it deserved. East End Dubs and Ingi Visions marking the bittersweet occasion.

7. Fuse Terrace Party at Mint Club, Leeds

Mostly recently, we recall their last collaboration with the FUSE gang. It only happened this time last month, but it was another memorable day for the party where alongside system, showed an evolution of their relationship with the East London collective. Taking over Mint Warehouse’s terrace, Enzo Siragusa, Archie Hamilton, Seb Zito and support from Ion Ludwig showcased a community at the top of its game. The event was all the more poignant, as it underlined there was life after Mint club’s premature demise.

Seven year itch? Hardly. We reckon Set One Twenty are just getting started.

Join them for their seventh birthday bonanza with Melliflow co-founder and deep digger Vera, Floog (who'll perform a special live set), Miller and Laidlaw on July 6th at 93 Feet East.
