Bart Skils has been a consistent member of the ever-expanding core of artists that have been spinning at Drumcode parties for the past few years. As we are waving a teary goodbye to the summer party season (and still regretting those tequila shots at 6am), you can be sure that Bart will bring a whole new energy to Tobacco Dock on 1st November. Read the interview below to find out about how he first met the Awakenings guys, and the top 5 tracks he’s been playing out this summer… plus listen to his latest mix here:

Hi Bart thanks for taking the time to speak to us. Been enjoying summer?

Summer has been great! Played some fantastic festivals, open air events and clubs. Also there was a lot of amazing new music to play out.

So you’re based in Amsterdam – how important has that part of the world been in influencing you musically?

Musically, I’ve grown up in Amsterdam so it has influenced me a lot. In the 90’s I used to work in a record store called Outland Records buying music for the techno basement. It gave me the chance to listen, order and get all the records first which was a great privilege at the time to build up your music collection. Besides that we have a great scene with fantastic parties, music driven crowds and a lot of friends who produce music as well.

You must know the Awakenings guys well – what’s your favourite thing about Awakenings?

I’ve known Rocco from Awakenings for over 15 years. The first time I met him was at a record store in a town nearby Amsterdam called Haarlem. I was hunting for records while he came along to bring flyers for his first Awakenings parties. He gave me a ride back home and that’s where our friendship started. The best thing about Awakenings is that they have a big passion for techno and their event production is one of the best worldwide. They have always been on the forefront of the techno scene with many great shows and artists around.

5 tracks that keep reappearing in your DJ sets at the moment:
Bart Skils – The Sweep
Stevie Wilson – The Secret
Dani Sbert – Psychological
Vigure – Legba Pa
Weska – Trust Your Madness

Any forthcoming releases or other projects you can shout about?

A have a few new tracks that I’m pretty happy about now and I’m always in the studio to make more. When I like them enough I sent them to Adam, he will play them for a while and afterwards decides which ones will be on the new Drumcode EP.

If you could describe your music in 3 words what would it be?

Stripped Rolling Techno

If we were to walk into your studio what would we see?

My studio is based in my garden near Vondelpark in the city center. The garden house is totally sound isolated so I can work there day and night. The studio itself is basically the place were I feel most comfortable; I can listen new music, try out sounds and relax. So I guess when you walk in you see my personal music heaven haha!

What are you most looking forward to about playing the Awakenings and Drumcode Halloween event in London?

Drumcode and Awakenings are a match made in heaven. Both have been solid players in the techno scene for years. The Awakenings production level in combination with the best techno around simply can’t go wrong.

Favourite horror movie?

Difficult… I don’t really watch that much TV or movies. Mainly I download series and when I watch a movie I prefer alternative art-house movies. The last series I’ve seen was Fargo by the Coen Brothers witch was very good so check it out if you have a chance!

Tell us something people might not know about you?

Let’s see. The thing I like doing when I’m not busy with music? It’s got to be my bikes. Besides collecting music for years I also have a big passion for vintage motorbikes. Currently I own a few including a 1980 Yamaha XT-500 and a German ‘52 NSU-Max. All amazing machines!
