After successfully stealing the show at some of the world’s most recognised festivals for ten years, back in May the Arcadia Spectacular celebrated a decade with its own inaugural festival. Now it has been confirmed that the animatronic arachnid will once again weave a web of magic over the capital next year. The dates for your diary are Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th May - May Day Bank Holiday weekend.
Aside from 50-foot scorch marks, the spider left quite an impression on London, with fireballs, lasers, acrobats, actors and pyrotechnics that blew the audience away. So much so, that the festival was ultimately nominated in four categories at this year’s Festival Awards. The high-octane drama and reimagined dancefloor will return bigger and bolder in 2019. As well as the spider centrepiece, the Reactor will be back - this time with a fresh new look, and the Arcadia team will be calling on more cultural collaborators to share the ancient ritual of dance.
Much like 2018, Arcadia London will be the only opportunity to experience the 50-tonne mechanical spider and its immersive world anywhere in the UK next year. Although Arcadia continues to spread its legs across the globe to far-flung places including Miami, Seoul, Taiwan and Bangkok, it’s London which feels like the home nest of the most talked about stage installation in the world.
The line-up is still underwraps, but last years’ two-day extravaganza saw Leftfield, Sven Väth and Groove Armada play on the four-by-four Saturday with Rudimental, Danny Byrd and Bad Company turning up the heat on bass-driven Sunday. At this point we can only speculate and what names will appear in 2019, though the magic of Arcadia means that the artists showcased almost play a support role to their ethereal backdrop.
