ARTIST FOCUS: THE BLACK MADONNA

An inspirational force behind the decks, The Black Madonna is known for fluent and dynamic vinyl performances, which from disco to techno. Her sets are well recognised for their inimitable energy, infectious joy and communicability with the dance floor, which along with her skill has cemented her as a beloved regular and crowd favourite at esteemed venues such as Panorama Bar.

There are many reasons to admire Marea Stamper – AKA – The Black Madonna, not only has she become one of the most respected DJs on the planet, but an accomplished and noble producer too. With releases through labels such as Argot, Stripped & Chewed, Classic, Freerange and Home Taping is Killing Music, The American born musician has constructed an outstanding back catalogue over the past few years.

Born in a remote Appalachian region of Kentucky, Stamper got her start young, attending her first rave at the young age of 14. Realising it would be her life’s passion; she dropped out of school at 16 to work in the industry. “My mom was really supportive of it,” she explains. “My dad wasn’t so thrilled, but mom let me move out and get my own apartment when I was 16.”

After moving from Kentucky to Chicago in her early 20s, Stamper made music under various aliases while working for Radek’s Dust Traxx label. After some time struggling to get consideration for her music, Garrett David – an intern at Dust Traxx asked to release ‘We Don’t Need No Music (Thank You Rahaan_’ on his new label. The Black Madonna admits that the success of that track, as well as a succeeding EP on Arot ‘Lady Of Sorrows’, “changed my whole life in a period of – not kidding – three months.”

Stamper is now creative director at Smart Bar, a decades-old Chicago venue where as well as organising residencies for Honey Dijon, DVS1 and more, she’s diversified the club’s make up with programs like DAPHNE which she describes as “a month full of reminders that women always have been and always will be central to dance and electronic music culture.”

On July 20, The Black Madonna will touch down in Ibiza to perform at Jamie Jones’ Paradise, where she’ll be spinning alongside the likes of Guy Gerber, Mathew Johnson, Skream, Dense & Pika, Patrick Topping and wAFF.
