HAAi has ended a massive year, by being awarded the coveted BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix of the Year. Beating off stiff competition from scene figureheads Four Tet, Avalon Emerson and Ricardo Villalobos, the Aussie superstar continues on her ascent. While the judging panel consisted of thoroughbreds such as host Pete Tong, presenters Danny Howard and Monki, representatives from leading industry publications and 2017 winner Helena Hauff, the public was heavily consulted - whittling it down to the four nominees on social media in the months before the deciding vote.

Her musical universe centres around house and techno with strong nods to disco, but also takes in afro and world music. A true crate digger, little is left unturned in a DJ who favours extended sets in order to explore every corner of her deep and diverse collection. The former Phonox Saturday night resident exited her position earlier in 2018. After the unmitigated success of Jasper James’ tenure, she was given the unenviable task of reaching a high-set bar. But she used it as an impetus, and arguably eclipsed her predecessor’s achievements with her weekly jaunts in Brixton. It made her departure a bittersweet affair - but paved the world for future success, with the EMOTY victory proving she kept the momentum moving. Tellingly, it left her employers with even bigger boots to fill.

You can listen back to her emphatic winning entry below, featuring music from peer and close-friend The Black Madonna, Mr. G, Axel Boman, several of her productions from her burgeoning Coconut Beats label and even a cameo from stonewall classic Da Hool Meet Her At The Love Parade. A more than worthy winner. Enjoy!
