Introducing J’Shez, Jonna and Arthur Jr. - the crew behind Midlands based underground house music label City Fly Records. We caught up with the guys to find out what they’ve been up to, what they have coming up soon and what they’re all about ahead of their forthcoming show in London on Friday 4th December.

So guys, tell us a little bit about City Fly - where the name came from and how the concept came together…

Well it all started in the east midlands city of Leicester over 10 years ago now, a collective of mates bored of the commercial nightlife wanted to bring the Underground House Sounds to the city.

The collective is quite diverse but we complement each other quite well. J’Shez is the organised one bringing the label together and looking after the operations side of things, Jonna brings his networking skills and an ear for up and coming music, he also is at the forefront of the Leicester parties, Arthur Jnr one of the founding fathers and the crazy one at the after parties.

The three between them bring their different music styles from deep house, disco to techno and everything in between. We cannot forget the artistic skills of Dale Tonks and Darran Pownall who over the years have contributed to the artwork for the events and label.

Tell us about some of your guest DJs, past and future… any particularly memorable sets?

To be honest I don’t think over the 10 years of running parties a guest has ever played badly. Kez YM has already played for us about 4 times now and we keep on booking him as the crowd go wild.

Some of the stand out sets in the City Fly dungeon have been from Simbad who played off 4 decks with samples and acapellas, that set was insane. Motor City Drum Ensemble playing in an intimate set to 150 people before he got bigger in popularity. Jimpster always rocked the place, there are too many to mention. Coming Up next year we are bringing label artist Tim Toh over for his first set in the UK.

And what about the record label - do you have one particular release that you would call your favourite?

It’s hard to list just a few of the releases but the Lay-Far EP deserves a mention. The remix from S3A was our fave remix so far.

Flori – Sing It Out (J’Shez Intergalactic Road Remix)

Another stand out release for us were from Creative Swing Alliance (Pablo Valentino & Steven Wobblejay). All 3 tracks were stand out and James Johnston muscled in with a smooth remix.

Creative Swing Alliance – What Women Need

It’s hard to list more of the releases but the Lay-Far EP deserves a mention. The remix from S3A was our fave remix so far.

Lay Far – Pensamento Nova (S3A Wurm Remix)

Released last summer. This one was abit of a summer anthem for us. It also recieved DJ Mags 'Money Shot' for UK and America.

If you were to summarise City Fly in 5 tracks, what would they be?

Kez YM – Late Night Remedy

Seven Davis Jnr – One

Digital Funk Addicts - Higher

GQ – Disco Nights

Ron Trent & Chez Damier - Morning Factory

And what is your favourite thing about your venue for December 4th?

It’s a bit of an unknown to us to be honest, our good friends at Axe on Wax Records have organised the venue and they say it’s a little underground gem in the heart of Dalston. It will be about 200 capacity which is what we like, intimate crowd and our line-up is sure to rock the venue, with Inkswel and Ugly Drums travelling over from Berlin and the formidable Steve Murphy. I cant wait!

What would your dream line up be, dead or alive?

J Dilla, Roy Ayers, Tribe Called Quest, Sun-Ra, Lonnie Liston Smith, Larry Levan, Moodymann & Mark Farina

Aside from your own events - who else is putting on a decent party in London these days?

As we are based in the Midlands we are not in London as much as we would like but Tief have pushing great parties for years now. When I lived in London for 7 years I was a regular at the Secretsundaze parties, I cant say I have been to a bad one, the line ups and venues are always on point. I have recently been impressed with the Cartuli’s Day parties, the last one at Oval Space was quality. I also noticed Seven Davis Jnr ‘s new party has amazing line ups.

What else do you have planned for the rest of 2015 / going into 2016?

So the party on the 4th is to celebrate City Fly’s birthday weekend. So on top of the party at Tipsy Bar we also have an instore set at Love Vinyl in Shoreditch in the day with the City Fly DJs, Inkswel & Ugly drums between 5pm-8pm. On the Saturday we have an instore at Vinyl Underground with Inkswel & Ugly Drums followed by the finale at the City Fly home of Sub8ten (formerly named Sophbeck).

On the release front, after huge delays Kez YM's long awaited 2nd EP on City Fly is finally released on Monday 30th on Vinyl & 14th December on Digital. Next year sees releases from Jonna, J’Shez, Arthur Jnr & Darran P on the first City Fly EP and we all have individual tracks, Eps and releases coming out next year including Jonna’s debut release on Shadeleaf with Kai Alce Remixes & also a track forthcoming on a Seven Davis Jnr EP on R2. We also have our annual residency at Gottwood Festival, Djing with the Pusic Records Crew @ Cloud 9 in an igloo club in Innsbruck, Austria and also in talks about a trip to the U.S too & a tour with Kez YM.

Is there anything else you would like to mention?
