If ever there was a label that epitomised Ricardo Villalobos’ skewed perspective on life, then few are a better match than Sleep Is Commercial. The Swiss-Chilean maverick hooks-up with Thomas Melchoir to grace the Berlin-based label with two interpretations of Wareika’s Shamania.
Take one scales back the elements, reimagining the track as a minimal offering. On the other hand, their second attempt remains more faithful to the original, albeit in the loosest sense of the word. With its off-kilter keys and brooding intensity, it is reminiscent of Wareika’s sometimes schizophrenic production. A fitting homage. Certainly, we can understand why Villalobos was drawn to the original in the first place. Its non-conformist approach panders to the oddball’s bohemian sensibilities.
Double trouble, both Ricky V and Thomas Melchior land in southern Vietnam after Xmas. They’re just two of the names involved with the third edition of Epizode festival, which takes over the idyllic isle of Phú Quốc between 28th December and 8th January for a scintillating 12-days of hedonism.
