Socks with sandals, laying your towel down early by the pool, knockout stage penalty shoot-outs, sauerkraut, the music of David Hasselhoff. Aside from premium range cars, there isn’t much overlap between Germany and English culture. But there is one thing we can think of, where our tastes align - and that would be our shared affinity for an ice cool jug of beer. Summer might nearly be over, but it’s not all tears - Oktoberfest season is almost upon us. We’ve rounded up the best taking place in the final third of 2019.
Camden Oktoberfest: 28th September - 19th October
Camden Town - is there a better location to hold an Oktoberfest? We doubt it. Known for its micro breweries and bohemian attitude, Camden is the ideal stop for the Bavarian tradition. Setting up at Electric Ballroom for four consecutive Saturdays - that’s a months worth of options right there. Starting on Saturday 28th September and continuing until 19th October, Camden Oktoberfest squeezes a lot of action into seven hours.
Live music performance comes from ten-piece brass brand Old Dirty Brasstards with support coming from the No Limit Street Band and Club de Fromage DJs. Herman Ze German will provide authentic Bavarian food, while the selection of beers on offer include Becks Vier, Spaten Garten and Löwenbräu Baden-Baden. Groups discounts and VIP upgrades available. The same organisers takeover Electric Brixton on 28th September and 19th October for the South London Oktoberfest, where the entertainment comes courtesy of The Brass Funkeys. Even Westminster has its own Oktoberfest - and this ones especially good as it’s for a worthy cause. Taking place on Saturday 5th October from 18:00, Oktoberfest Party for the ABF Soldiers’ Charity seeks to raise funds for serving and retired servicemen and women and any family they may have left behind. The event will be held at the London Scottish Regiment.
At the moment you can take advantage of the early bird price. Admission includes a complimentary beer on arrival. Music comes from live band Handsome & the Breadcrumbs. Expect the usual Oktoberfest antics, including games and giveaways.
Vegtoberfest, Fest Camden: 12th October
Lastly, anybody looking to experience all the thrills of an Oktoberfest, whilst maintaining their eco-conscious lifestyle should seriously consider Vegtoberfest - a vegan Oktoberfest. There’s two dates to choose from: Saturday 12th and 19th October, both of them happening at FEST, Camden. As well as vegan-friendly beers and wines, London’s favourite vegan street food trader Rudy’s Dirty Vegan Diner will be on hand. Brasstermind and Dee Riley provide the entertainment.
Tickets for all the above events are on sale now.
