DJ, producer and London party starter Enzo Siragusa is one of the key figures behind revered party and label FUSE, and the father of what many refer to as the London underground house sound. Ahead of his appearances at LWE’s Cuttin Headz show, Sonus festival and Mint festival this summer, we caught up to see what he’s up to since his progression from London club stalwart to global touring sensation.
Tell us a little bit about Level at Studio 338. How does this party concept differ from a usual FUSE event?
LEVEL takes place at Studio 338 at the end of July. It’s a 17 hour rave across three dance floors that will focus on the FUSE and Infuse artists. The event production will be bigger than our Village Underground parties. It’s important that we evolve as we head into our tenth year and events like this show how far we have come from a humble after party at 93 Feet East.
What is it like having 93 Feet East refurbed and reopen? How much does this venue mean to the FUSE crew?
That venue holds a very special place in my heart. It had massive impact on the early days of my career, and the FUSE boys careers. We learned so much in that place! It’s where I perfected my craft, and where my obsession with sound grew. I helped rebuild the system in there back in the day and its still there now. To see the team turn it around after the sorry state it was left in has been amazing. They are programming a real variation of events and allowing new promoters to lay foundations in London, and DJs to explore the art of DJing, as I was allowed when we started FUSE. I feel this is what has been missing in London. It’s a grass roots venue.
No Ibiza residency so to speak this year, but your involved with Amnesia's new Monday night party, Pyramid. What is it about this venue that keeps you coming back?
We played one event with them this year on the 16th July. There is so much history in that club, and I have a deep connection as I used to go there in the 90s. I’ve seen some unbelievable parties in that place. Ricardo, Zip and Sonja Moonear will host the terrace and we will do our thing in the main room, so there is a perfect synergy there. It makes complete sense.
You're back at Mint festival this year. It says a lot about your chemistry with the Leeds crowd that you get invited back. What's special about it?
Over the years I have built a very close connection with Leeds and I love to play there, thanks to the guys at Mint. Playing a variety of events in Leeds like the big main stage of Cocoon In The Park, or the intimate Mint Club where you are close to the clubbers, or one of those special day times on the Mint Warehouse summer terrace parties – I’ve been able to connect with the crowd on different levels. It really has become a home away from home. I can’t wait be back!
Point G aka the legendary DJ Gregory and Traumer forthcoming on INFUSE - that's a huge coup for the sub-label. How did it come about?
This one came about through Seb Zito, one of the core residents. The A&R of Infuse is headed up by all of the Fuse boys including myself, and it’s a platform for quality music coming from the community around the main Fuse artists.
Sonus coming up in August. Is Croatia the Europe's new party destination?
I enjoy playing Sonus, it’s become a very special place for FUSE, this will be our fifth year. I think it is a great party destination and the location of Sonus lends itself so well to a good clubbing holiday. As a whole I think Croatia is most definitely one Europe’s leading party destinations and it’s a beautiful country to visit outside of the festivals too.
