TEN MINUTES WITH: MONKI

Following in the footsteps of Annie Mac, B-Traits and Heidi, Monki is one of our favourite tastemaker radio DJ’s. She sets her own tone and agenda through both her Radio 1 show and her Zoo Music imprint, showcasing a broad range of electronic music – expect anything from Danny Tenaglia to 2 Bad Mice to Roots Manuva to Rodhad. She’s sure to be a long term fixture on our airwaves, for that we’re glad. We caught up with her for a quick chat…

You've been championing new electronic talent on your show for quite some time now, but how did you land your own show on BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra?

Originally I was on Rinse FM and from there I did a pilot show for the 'In New DJs We Trust' series which is now called 'The Residency' – from there, I got the show. I stayed in that slot for 3 months, then covered B.Traits for 3 months and then got given my own slot!

Tell us about your label Zoo Music…

Zoo Music came about in 2012, originally it was just me putting friends music out. It has sort of stayed like that, we've got a nice little roster now: Woz, Applebottom, Kalyde, Gotsome, Troy Gunner etc… I really enjoy the label side of what I do and hope to watch it grow into something bigger.

Your musical taste is quite eclectic, who are your main influences?

I think my main influences at the beginning were probably more radio based. Rinse FM, Friday nights on Radio 1 and the specialist shows. The broadcasting had more influence on me than specific producers.

We also love your sense of style - what are your favourite stores / designers?

There's this wicked little shop near my way called Natterjacks. I get most of my stuff from there because it's literally down the road. Also, you can't beat a trip to Uniqlo.

You collaborate with Mele on NRG flash, but aside from that, If you could play B2B alongside one DJ, past or present, who would it be?

Oof hard one. Armand Van Helden would be cool, I've never met the guy. I saw him at Parklife backstage and probably should have said hi, but I went into fan mode and got a bit shy!!

And finally - you're performing at some real cool festivals this year as well as the AMP All Day Rave at Tobacco Dock - which one have you most enjoyed playing at in the past?

I think this year so far it has to be Sonar in Barcelona. We did an NRG Flash set and we were sort of blown away by the reaction. We were on the same time as Skepta as well so we were a bit worried about the crowd disappearing but everyone stuck with us and more joined in, it was definitely a highlight.
