TT’S TOP 5 SIMPLE THINGS FESTIVAL PICKS

With Simple Things Festival, Bristol fast approaching, we decided to take a closer look at five of the hottest acts who are performing on Saturday 24th October. Tickets for the show are available right here on Ticket Tannoy, see the bottom of this page for more information.

1. Skepta & JME

North London MCs JME and his brother Skepta formed their infamous grime group and record label Boy Better Know in 2005 as a means to publish their own music. The resulting crew as well as the label expanded to welcome more members including fellow north London MCs Frisco, Shorty and Solo 45 as well as Jammer from east London.

2. Savages

Savages are a London-based post-punk revival rock band, formed in 2011. Their debut album, Silence Yourself, reached number 19 in the UK Albums Chart in May 2013. The band’s guitarist Gemma Thompson says the band name was derived from books, such as Lord of the Flies, that she read when she was younger.

3. Lee “Scratch” Perry

Lee “Scratch" Perry was born in a rural section of Jamaica in 1936. Intent on making it in music, Perry moved to Kingston in the late 1950s where he began working for a series of studios. In 1968 he broke out on his own, established a new label and issued a string of hits, including People Funny Boy and Return Of Django. Perry was instrumental in introducing remixing into the reggae sound. He worked Bob Marley and later with The Clash, Paul McCartney and the Beastie Boys.

4. Ron Trent

After experimenting with beat machines and a small keyboard in 1986, Ron Trent began recording the track "Altered States" while still in high school. He released it on Armando's Warehouse Records in 1990. The track became a club hit among devotees of techno, despite Trent's background in the Chicago house scene. Trent then began working with Detroit producers such as Chez Damier, with whom he issued several singles before co-founding the label Prescription Records in 1993.

5. Penguin Cafe

The Penguin Cafe was founded by Arthur Jeffes in 2009, bringing together a talented and disparate group of musicians from the likes of Suede, Gorillaz and Razorlight, initially to perform his father Simon Jeffes’ legacy of world renowned Penguin Cafe Orchestra music, ten years after his untimely death in 1997.
