It’s been a long two years since Warpaint have released an album – however this week they’ve announced the follow up to their self-titled debut. ‘Heads Up’ will be released on September 23 rd on Rough Trade Records and to whet our appetite for it, the foursome shared a new song, entitled ‘New Song’ (cheers).
The album was recorded with producer Jacob Bercovici - in a press release, Jenny Lee Lindberg said of the process, “Everybody was allowed to have their space, time and creative freedom with songs and figure out, ‘I wonder what the best notes would be? I wonder what the best party would be to play?’”
The new album, which follows 2014’s ‘Warpaint’, was influenced by an eclectic group of artists, including Janet Jackson, Bjork, Kendrick Lamar and Outkast. "I feel really proud of what we made – almost surprised and shocked," Lindberg said in a statement. "When we were making it, I was like, 'I wonder what this is going to sound like? How's this going to come together?' I love the way that it came together so nicely. I feel so proud of it, and like it's an evolution of our band. It sounds like a mature version of Warpaint."
Between albums, all four bandmates have been busy working on solo projects - Lingberg released a solo album under the tag ‘namejennylee’, whilst Emily Kokal worked with Saul Williams and Paul Bergmann. Stella Mozgawa was featured on a Kurt Vile EP and Theresa Wayman has been working on her solo project entitled ‘BOSS’. If ‘New Song’ is anything to go by, we can’t wait to see them perform together again.
You can catch Warpaint playing songs from the new album on 22nd October at Simple Things Festival in Bristol.
